The South Carolina Maritime Heritage Foundation has developed relationships
with many organizations to gain information and insight to support
the development of our programs. These organizations have been very
generous with their ideas. Many of these sail training programs have
been in existence for decades. We will use the best ideas from these
peer organizations and apply them to our future programming.
Some outstanding examples of these programs are:
American Sail Training Association (ASTA) - The
South Carolina Maritime Heritage Foundation is a member of the
American Sail Training Association (ASTA).
Once construction of the Spirit of South Carolina is complete,
the tall ship will participate in ASTA events and embrace the shared
mission of youth education, leadership development and the preservation
of maritime heritage in North America. The American Sail Training
Association is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization with 260 sail

Ocean Classroom Foundation - 25 years of operation. Currently
operate three tall ships. High school and college programs, some
offering academic credit through Proctor Academy in New Hampshire

Sea~Mester Programs - over 30 years of operation offering
experiential and educational semester voyages for high school and

AMISTAD America, Inc. - A national, non-profit educational
organization. Freedom Schooner Amistad visits ports nationally and
internationally as an ambassador for friendship and goodwill. It
serves as a floating classroom, icon and monument to the millions
of souls lost as a result of the transatlantic slave trade. It symbolizes
inherent lessons and legacies of freedom, justice, perseverance,
cooperation and leadership arising from the historic Amistad Incident
of 1839-and offers an important message for all Americans about our

Los Angeles Maritime Institute - Since its founding
in 1992, the mission of The Los Angeles Maritime Institute's "TopSail
Youth Program" has been to use sail training to provide youth
with real-life challenges that develop knowledge, skills and attitudes
needed to live healthy, productive lives. This multi-award-winning

Sea Education Association at Woods Hole - SEA's role in education
today is an important one: to prepare students for the challenges
they will face in an increasingly complex society. They believe that
decision making and problem-solving skills, along with self-confidence,
humility, and respect for others, can be learned most memorably through

Inland Seas Education Association - Founded in 1989. Inland
Seas Education Association (ISEA) is a non-profit organization whose
mission is to provide a floating classroom where people of all ages
can gain first-hand training and experience in the Great Lakes ecosystem.
The knowledge gained through these experiences will provide the leadership,
understanding and commitment needed for the long-term stewardship

Brilliant Program at Mystic Seaport - For teens or adults,
the Brilliant program is a seagoing sailing adventure in which the
participants act as crew under the direction of professional sailors.
Sailing aboard a traditional vessel provides an awareness of history
and an appreciation for craftsmanship. Going to sea makes a timeless
connection with our natural world. All hands become fully involved
in sailing the vessel, and the individual becomes part of a water-borne
community by helping "for the good of the ship.It is

The Wooden Boat Foundation - The Wooden Boat Foundation in
Port Townsend, Washington has joined with some of the best sail training
vessels in Puget Sound, offering trips 3 hours to 14 days in length,
for students 12 years old to adult, on boats as large as 84 feet.
The Captains have sailed in many oceans and bring diverse experience
to their dedication as Educators and mariners. The trips are for
those looking to learn the sailing complexities of larger boats and
immerse themselves in the tangible and rich maritime culture these

Hawaiian Chieftain Summer Camp - Over 50,000 young people

South Street Maritime Museum (New York City) - The tall ship
Pioneer provides a unique classroom in which students can develop
environmental awareness and historical perspective. Students act
as crew members by helping to raise the sails and then participate
in hands-on learning stations. Our thought provoking experiences
help students achieve science or social studies standards while enjoying

Living Classrooms Foundation - A non-profit organization,
operated for the benefit of the community at large, providing hands-on
education and job training for students from diverse backgrounds,
with a special emphasis on serving at-risk youth. The Foundation

America True Program for Girls - The Tall Ship Semester for
Girls breaks down traditional barriers and puts girls at the helm
of a tall ship at sea. The program offers girls who might otherwise
never have such an opportunity a chance to test themselves, to accomplish

Bytown Brigantine Foundation - Bytown Brigantine Inc. is
a non-profit charitable organization, dedicated to building character

Salem Maritime National Historic Partnership - The Friendship is managed as a partnership between the National Park Service and
the Friends of Friendship, Inc., a not for profit corporation organized
by the Salem Partnership. The ship will be open for tours at historic
Derby Wharf as part of the programs of the Salem Maritime National
Historic Site and will sail as an ambassador ship for the Essex National

Schooner Ernistina Programs - The Massachusetts
Schooner ERNESTINA offers multi-disciplinary, hands-on education
programs tailored to meet the specific needs of schools, colleges
and other educational and cultural organizations. Program offerings
range from dockside visits for any age, day sails for sixth grade
and up and five day passages at sea from coastal communities of Massachusetts,

The Nautical Heritage Society - Operates the tall
ship Californian. A nonprofit organization dedicated to helping citizens
understand how important the coastal marine environment is to the

Golden Gate Tall Ships Society - Building on San
Francisco Bay's rich nautical tall ship heritage, the Golden Gate
Tall Ships Society promotes the renaissance of traditional sailing
ships. We provide youth with scholarships for lifelong learning through

The Ocean Institute (Dana Point, California) -
Nationally known for its hands-on marine science, environmental
education and maritime history programs. More than 78,000 K-12
students and 6,000 teachers annually participate in the Institute's
61 award-winning, immersion style programs. To learn oceanography
and science, students voyage onto the ocean to feel and taste the
salty sea spray, sort through live specimens, observe migrating
whales and collect scientific data. To learn maritime history and
literature, students spend an entire night aboard the brig Pilgrim—each
student hauling lines, hoisting sails, standing night watch and

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation – Ship is
currently under construction in Maine to offer Bermudians affordable,
world-class sail training, year-round, for students aged 14-25+.
Programs will reinforce school curriculum and trade training—while
